Greensky Bluegrass returns to Sullivan Hall next week to promote their new album, “Handguns.” This summer, the group performed at a number of festivals, including Bum-bershoot, Bonnaroo and Hardly Strictly Bluegrass where they electrified crowds with their (mostly) acoustic Progressive Bluegrass.

The tour was very special on all levels and as the Sci-Fi, Middle Eastern Funk band prepares to go back across the pond again in the next few months, be prepared for another Earth-Shattering performance!

Last year the band, guitarist Gabriel Marin, bassist John Ferrara, and percussionist Justin Ahiyon, released their third full-length album, That’s What’s Up, a progressive jam record full of foreign rhythms and complex time signatures.
A new live DVD is in the works for a March release, but you won’t have to wait until then to experience this band’s mythical improvisation. The Stomping Ground will be opening up a great night of music.

The Gourds Bring Live Show and New Album to NYC

“One of the best performing bands in America” - New York Times

The hard-touring band The Gourds - whom the New York Times called “one of the best performing bands in America” - are currently in the middle of a 37-date summer and fall tour. The band has earned a reputation for incredible concerts. Frontman Kevin Russell has described the live show as “kind of a cross between a revival, a house party, a pep rally, and a pow wow.”

The Gourds will also be performing during this year’s Americana Music Conference in Nashville at the Mercy Lounge on October 12th.

The tour will give audiences a chance to hear new songs from the band’s Vanguard Records debut Old Mad Joy created at Levon Helm Studios with producer Larry Campbell (Musical Director of Helm’s ‘Midnight Rambles’ and formerly with Bob Dylan). Old Mad Joy was released this past Tuesday, September 13th.

In a recent review, the Houston Press raved, “Don’t be surprised if they hit 80 home runs this year as they tour hard behind what will likely be the most important album of their storied career.”

The band has played roughly 150 shows a year since 1998, so they possess an intuition with one another as performers and an utter command of the stage.

More Than Just The Music: Grayson Capps Tells a Few Tales

Southern Soul, howling back-country stomp and raucous roadhouse blues; or in other words, Rott N’ Roll; a title created by Grayson Capps’ fans in New Orleans as the experience had when seeing the band perform live.

Grayson Capps first discovered music in Alabama where he was born and raised. His father and friends would sit around the house getting drunk, telling stories and strumming acoustic guitars. They’d run down songs by Hank Williams, Tom T. Hall, Glenn Campbell and Woodie Guthrie, whose influences you can hear on Capps fifth studio album, The Lost Cause Minstrels, featuring a new backup band, dubbed The Lost Cause Minstrels.

While Capps’ has toured throughout the South, he rarely reaches the Northeast. Catch Grayson Capps with The Lost Cause Minstrels Thursday Oct. 6^th at Sullivan Hall, featuring a New Orleans native known best as the inspiration of the character Davis of HBO’s Treme. Folks, the REAL Davis opens the show, followed by the great local talent of Big Wake.

Curious facts about Grayson Capps:,
Young filmmaker Shainee Gabel (who befriended Grayson through a previous project they’d worked on together) discovered his father’s unpublished novel Off Magazine Street. She fell in love with the story and set out to turn it into a film. Through a confluence of events, the movie A Love Song For Bobby Long, starring John Travolta and Scarlett Johansson, was born. Grayson wrote four songs for the film, including the title track. He made a cameo appearance, as well. The story was based upon those early years with his father’s friends back in Alabama. Bobby Long was, indeed, a real person.

On September 16^th Greensky Bluegrass, considered to be one of the most exciting bands in today’s music scene, will bring their unique bluegrass rock to Sullivan Hall with openers The Wild Northern.

Like a breath of fresh air, this five piece band plays traditional bluegrass instruments and uses them to create original songs that are unique, yet feel comfortable and familiar. Though they have been likened to ‘70s era Americana acts like The Band, Greensky would prefer not to be compared to any other bands. “We really just try to make music as a group that sounds and feels right to us”, says mandolin player Paul Hoffman, later adding that “it is nice to know that other people really dig it, too.”

On any given night, in addition to a myriad of excellent original songs, one might hear traditional bluegrass songs with an exploratory rock and roll jam or selections from the Talking Heads, Jimi Hendrix, The Grateful Dead, or Bob Marley turned bluegrass.

With a musical career spanning more than thirty-five years, guitarist and sonic innovator Tim Reynolds is known for his masterful command of melody and timing and for his uncanny ability to improvise on any instrument he touches. Having explored most musical styles, from rock, jazz and blues to classical and reggae, Reynolds’ wide-ranging musical versatility is evident each time he picks up his acoustic or electric guitar. Technically brilliant, yet emotionally honest, Reynolds’ music is inspired and authentic.

It was in the mid 1980s that Reynolds founded his breakthrough electric power trio, TR3 (Tim Reynolds Trio), known for their fusion of funk, rock, and jazz. He toured with TR3 during the 1980s and 1990s, using a rotating cast of musicians. The group disbanded as Reynolds become increasingly involved in The Dave Matthews Band. The project was resurrected in 2007 with permanent members Mick Vaughn on bass and Dan Martier on drums.

Sullivan Hall’s Spring Funk Fest, set for Friday June 3^rd, 2011, will showcase some amazing regional funk and groove talent. It will feature four incredible acts, including: Project Blue Book, Frank Viele and the Manhattan Project, Kurt Reifler, and Universal Funk Order.

Boston based Project Blue Book has just finished their debut full-length album, “Cheetah Speed,” produced by the one only Alan Evans of Soulive, and is ready to hit NYC with their own exciting brand of psychedelic jam funk. The band combines elements of funk, prog, reggae, gospel and rock to create a sound that could only be Project Blue Book.

Mix together some funky bass lines, driving horns and syncopated rhythms, and you’ll get 6-piece sensation, Frank Viele and the Manhattan Project. Hailing from the Metropolitan area with an incomparable enthusiastic stage presence and a successful debut album “Neon Lights”, it’s no surprise that FV&TMP’s popularity has exploded within the last year.

Kurt Reifler not only plays guitar and sings in his band Kill Kurt Reifler, he is also is an unbelievable drummer, who was recently featured on the homepage of Modern Drummer Magazine. Reifler has “always tried to play the weirdest drums available.” This is undoubtedly reflected in the unique music that he creates, which fuses rock and funk elements.

Universal Funk Order, an 8-piece funk band from Newark, Delaware, is a force of energetic and powerful rhythms with over 10 years touring experience between them. They flawlessly fuse their individual experiences in the music world and perform an explosion of electrifying sound that will have you dancing all night long.

There's an amazing night of music in the making at Sullivan Hall on May 27th. Featured act, Joe Krown Trio, is comprised of New Orleans Legends Joe Krown (Hammond B-3), Walter "Wolfman" Washington (guitar &vocals) & Russell Batiste (drums & background vocals). The group has been featured on HBO's original Series Treme and is well known for their nearly four year long Sunday residency at a local New Orleans nightclub, the Maple Leaf Bar. The combination of the soulful vocals of Walter Washington with the big sound of the Hammond B-3 and the masterful drumming skills of Russell Batiste Jr. has developed into a sound all its own.

The Trio will be followed by New York City's funk masters MiloZ. Frontman Milo is known for his amazing stage presence and ability to orchestrate his bands' excellent musicianship into an all out dance funk frenzy. Openers for the night will be Brooklyn based up and comers Outer Borough Brass Band.

Wicked Knee feat. Billy Martin of MMW

For nearly 20 years, Medeski Martin & Wood (MMW) have been leaders of the modern improv jazz scene, bringing this often marginalized music to the jam band masses. In recent years the incredibly talented members have branched out into solo and side projects.

One of these projects, Wicked Knee, will be coming to Sullivan Hall on May 11th. The band features MMW drummer Billy Martin, alongside Steven Bernstein (Sex Mob, Spanish Fly) on trumpet, Curtis Fowlkes (The Jazz Passengers) on trombone , and Marcus Rojas (Spanish Fly) on tuba creating, "RagTimeFunk joints with inappropriate avant-garde interludes to keep everything out of focus."

Opening for the night will be "Philly's Secret Weapon" Grimace Federation. Grimace is quickly following in MMW's footsteps, bringing improvisational electronic jazz to new audiences.

On May 13th Wyllys & the New York Hustler Ensemble returns to Sullivan Hall for another raging dance party with their all-star cast, this time accompanied by RAQ & Conspirator guitarist Chris Michetti and Rob Marsher (Addison Groove Project, Matisyahu). The ensemble describes themselves as a "professionally trained and road tested group of pimps who excel at improvisation," and is comprised of ringleader DJ Wyllys, Jennifer Hartswick & Nathalie Cressman of Trey Anastasio Band on horns/vox, and Zac Lasher of U-Melt on synths/keys. Legendary jam all-stars Max Creek are celebrating their fortieth anniversary with an East Coast tour, including a show at Sullivan Hall on April 29.

Max Creek is a living, breathing historical study in a hugely significant yet too-oft overlooked American subculture: the jam band. Creek guesses they’ve performed nearly 3,000 times over their forty years together.

A true jam band, the real experience is the live show. Max Creek is known for its improvisational style and unrivaled small-club concert experiences, and has influenced later iconic jam bands such as Phish and moe..

Opening for Max Creek will be Union Street Preservation Society, an emerging Americana string band hailing from Brooklyn, New York. Mixing bluegrass with folk, old-time, blues and early jazz, the quintet is a crossroads for five diverse musicians to celebrate and build upon the American roots tradition. Their spirited vocal harmonies and runaway-train instrumentals breathe fire and soul into timeless standards, spirituals and honky-tonk anthems, emphasizing the freshness of their original tunes.

Citizen Cope Enjoys Glen David Andrews

When Glen David Andrews played Sullivan Hall on March 29, everyone was curious to see what the NOLA trumpet player would bring to the table. Even Citizen Cope stopped by to hang and check out the show. It was a great night, and Andrew's soulful performance reinforced the massive talent within those Andrews family genes.

Steve Kimock kicked off the first night of his three-week NYC residency at Sullivan Hall last Wednesday with a performance jam-packed with rock legends. Scheduled special guests included New Orleans musician Henry Butler manning piano, Andy Hess of Gov’t Mule, Black Crowes and John Scofield on bass, and John Morgan Kimock of Crazy Engine, on drums. In addition, Donna Jean Godchaux (The Grateful Dead/Moonalice) and guitarist Marc Muller (Dead On: Recreating the Grateful Dead Note For Note) both stepped in to lend their talents on this stellar night of music.

According to Steve Kimock, “The show on Wednesday was awesome! It was ridiculous, so much better than I could have hoped. I knew it would be fine, since it’s a nice place with decent people, so the nature of the event was that it should have been cool, but it was extraordinary. I’m reeling.”

What a funky jam packed weekend at Sullivan Hall with George Porter & The Runnin' Pardners! Friday night Warren Haynes made his way over after the Hot Tuna show at The Beacon, joining Porter on stage for "He Bite Me" and "Next Time You See Me." Saturday night sit-ins developed into a whose who of NOLAfunk musicians, many of whom had just finished playing the "Red Hot & New Orleans" show at The Brooklyn Academy of Music. Ian & Ivan Neville, Big Sam Williams, Maurice Brown, Nigel Hall & Eric Krasno were amongst the performers to hit the stage that night, with Trombone Shorty and John Scofield mingling in the crowd for this musical treat.

Both nights have some incredible openers. Friday night welcomes back Lo Faber & Aaron Maxwell of God Street Wine. Their appearance at Sullivan Hall for a private party in October generated tons of buzz from fans old and new. This will be a very special show! Saturday openers High & Mighty Brass Band and Ikebe Shakedown will be sure to set the funk party in full swing.

Nothing to Lose: a Conversation with God Street Wine’s Lo Faber and Aaron Maxwell

In 1988 a new quintet burst onto the New York City music realm, invigorating and ultimately helping to define what became known as the jamband scene. God Street Wine was known for breathtaking shows at Nightingales and the newly opened Wetlands. Affiliating with other fledgling talent like Spin Doctors and Blues Traveler, GSW seemed destined to take the high road to success. Fate had other things in mind and after a decade—GSW called it quits. Now, after a recent string of extraordinarily successful reunion shows benefiting the National MS Society—GSW returns musically mature and ready to rock for a new crowd on the upcoming Jam Cruise 9. Front men Lo Faber and Aaron Maxwell speak candidly about their past and look eagerly to some special acoustic duo shows just on the horizon. The pair will performing at Mexicali Live in Teaneck, NJ on November 5 and again at New York City’s Sullivan Hall, on December 3 supporting George Porter Jr. & Runnin’ Pardners.

What led to God Street Wine reuniting this summer at the Gramercy and Irving Plaza?

Aaron: Basically, we did a couple of shows after we broke up in 2001 at the Wetlands or something. We really didn’t have any plans to do anything. Our drummer Tomo (Tom Osander) was playing with Damien Rice and lived in Ireland—everyone was doing their own thing. Then I had a good friend who I grew up with in my town pass away—Paul Ducharme. It was such a shocking and sad event.

Lo: Dave DeWitt asked us to play the memorial.

Aaron: I don’t think we even hesitated. As it turned out we all decided we could do it. I rehearsed with Dan (Pifer) and Jon (Bevo) in Brooklyn one day, but the overall thought was not to worry about it and just gather and play in tribute. For me it was a cathartic process of dealing with the bad circumstance. It was amazing to me how good it felt to play—the baggage wasn’t there that had gathered near the end of us playing together as God Street Wine. With that experience being so good, when Mike Weiss, our road manager, asked us to do the benefit shows for MS it felt like, “Yeah, as long as we’re doing it for the right reasons we can approach it in a way that is an enjoyable experience for all of us—then it makes sense to do it.” Every step of the way the benefit shows seemed to retain that element of purity. There was no fear about what the next step of our lives was going to be. Was there going to be food on our table if we play these gigs? That wasn’t there.

Was that one of the lynchpins behind the bands original break-up? Did you feel as if you had come to the end of the road and everyone had a separate agenda?

Lo: I think we were having a very difficult time of our lives career-wise. We were in a horrible situation with our record label—Mercury. They got bought by Seagram’s and so everyone that we knew at Mercury got fired—we had no support. They had us make a record they had no intention of putting out. We were under contract for one more, so we were like, “what the hell, let’s go make a record.” And it still has not been put out to this day. I think that nobody in the band wanted to move forward because we didn’t know which direction we were going.

Now you two are going to be performing as a duo—will you be playing GSW songs differently when it’s just the two of you?

Lo: It won’t be as loud.

Aaron: And I’m using a capo on some of it—which is fucking me up left and right, but that’s OK. The answer is we don’t know. It’s unfolding before us as we do it.

Lo: And we’re also connecting with our career before God Street Wine.

Aaron: That’s right, it’s coming full circle. We had a duo in Provincetown, Massachusetts for a couple of summers called Dos Heteros. We would play jazz standards and stuff and we’re doing some of that in this incarnation—throwing in different standards and types of songs that we wouldn’t do in GSW but is fun for us.

The Gramercy and Irving Plaza reunion shows must have been gemstones in your crown of achievements. How was it to be back onstage as a band?

Aaron: I felt more present at those shows than I did in the whole 11 years of GSW. There was nothing to lose. I felt like I could focus on the music—completely enjoyable from the beginning to the end.

Lo: I would agree.

Oh What A Night!

Not only did Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds absolutely kill it at their album release party last night, but they were graced with a very special guest as well. Richie Cannata, the saxophonist for Billy Joel, sat in for a portion of the rocking funky soul party that kept people dancing for hours.

We certainly have our share of Billy Joel love this month. On November 26, The 52nd Street Band will be performing the best of Billy from the 70's, 80's, and 90's.

Radiators Announce Breakup

New Orleans’ The Radiators will break-up after a final run of shows. The seminal improvisational group will tour through June, including a New Year’s Eve show at Ardmore, PA’s The Palombaro Club, the MOMs Ball and a final appearance at The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival.

A note from the group reads:

After 33 years.…over 4500 live shows….and a dozen albums.…legendary New Orleans rockers The Radiators are finally calling it quits. The band has officially decided to break up in mid-June following their final tour which will include one last New Years’ Eve run, a MOMs Ball and also headlining their final appearance at The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. The band will honor all dates already on their schedule and are planning to add as many shows as possible before ending their storied 33 year career. The guys want to whole-heartedly thank their long time fans for making this ride as amazing as it has been. They truly feel that their fans are the best and most dedicated in the world and have kept their traveling circus alive. Individual band members will announce their plans in the near future.

You can catch one of their final performances at Sullivan Hall on November 17 and/or 18.

A buccaneer in a smoking jacket, a Rastafarian in a body suit of brilliant color, and a man dressed as a demonic marmot all gyrated to the interplanetary vibrations as the 14-piece band snaked a cosmic conga line through the crowd, bedecked in Egyptian headdresses and spangly regalia.

A strange sight, to be sure, but for the sartorially unorthodox Sun Ra Arkestra, it’s the one night a year when the most conspicuous people are those not wearing costumes. For Sun Ra’s “ghost band” — the term used to describe a big band that continues performing in the absence of its leader — it seemed that the specter of the late space-age prophet, or at least the omniscient Eye of Horus hung over Sullivan Hall, only blocks away from the Greenwich Village Halloween Parade.

“Sun Ra was talking about outer space before they put up the Sputnik,” said the saxophonist Marshall Allen, the Arkestra’s 86-year-old bandleader. “We talk to people about other worlds in order to broaden their minds so they can make a better planet.”

Though they could not literally transport the audience to another dimension, the band did give everyone an unforgettable head trip through their hallmark feral squawks and extraterrestrial dissonances, including such Arkestra classics as “We Travel the Space Ways,” “We’ll Wait for You” and “Fate in a Pleasant Mood.”

Part Cab Calloway, intergalactic explorer, and Tralfamadorian time traveler à la Kurt Vonnegut’s “Slaughterhouse-Five,” the saturnine Sun Ra, whose earthly body ceased functioning in 1993, firmly inhabited the interstitial space between science fiction and science fact.

Born Herman Poole Blount in Birmingham, Ala., in 1914, Sun Ra, the purported victim of an alien abduction, often spoke in gnomic mystical mantras that straddled the line between Jacques Derrida and the inscrutable palaver one might hear in the Times Square subway transfer tunnel. Sun Ra’s eccentric mien features prominently in the 1974 cult film “Space Is the Place,” in which he stars: “The people have no music that is in coordination with their spirits. Because of this, they’re out of tune with the universe.”

“It’s a very deep, inner spiritual thing that goes on when you play this music,” said the trombonist Dick Griffin, who has been with the Arkestra since 1960. And as far as Sun Ra’s Outer Space Employment Agency goes, it’s relevant now more than ever, he said. “You know what? It’s still open.”

One can’t help but wonder whether the alleged Oct. 13 U.F.O. sighting in Chelsea might have been Sun Ra himself returned to Earth from the afterlife. Mr. Allen reported a similar sighting earlier this year. “We were traveling in Oklahoma and out west and a U.F.O was following our van,” he said. “You could see it clean. It followed us and followed us and all of a sudden it turned, and whoosh! Disappeared.”
